Abstract
A coupled thermo-mechanical model has been developed to calculate the residual stresses upon cooling, the resulting distortions and cracking sensitivity as a function of the casting conditions. The developed programmed module was used to carry out investigations on thermal stresses and cracking behaviour of γ-TiAl investment castings. Special ring geometries with various casting moduli were chosen for the determination of the cracking sensitivity of TiAl castings. A criterion function that describes the cracking sensitivity has been derived from the temperature and stress history. The calculated results were compared to the real TiAl castings.
