Abstract

Radiation induced free radicals in seeds have been studied by means of electron spin resonance. At least two classes of radicals are formed, one giving a narrow type absorption line and the other, which is most likely a doublet, giving a broad absorption. Concentrations of the two types of radicals can be estimated for any sample by a simple semi-empirical method, only involving the area and height of the integrated absorption. The yield and the change of concentration of the two radicals upon storage are shown to depend on the conditions during irradiation as well as storage. Possible correlations between the behaviour of the induced free radicals and the biological damage together with the limitations of such estimations are discussed.
