Abstract

Objective To summarize the projects funded in the field of locomotor system from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) during 2010 to 2013. Methods The number and total funds in the field of locomotor medicine from NSFC was statistically analyzed, and the situation of various branches and hot issues were reviewed during 2010 to 2013. Re- suits 1) There were 819 funded projects with the total funds of 381.00 million RMB in H06 of NSFC, including 476 projects (285.01 million RMB) in research programs and 343 projects (95.99 billion RMB) in talent programs; 2) The number of funded project was 563 (252.33 million RMB) in major research plans, 277 (61.42 million RMB) in young scientists funds, and 60 (28.95 million RMB) in less developed regions; 3) The funded fields were H0605 (the injury and repair of bone, joints and soft tissue, 256 projects), H0609 (the degenerative disease of bone, joints and soft tissue, 181 projects), H0604 (the medical materials, 72 proj- ects), H0601 (the abnormal structure, function and development of locomotor system, 63 projects) and H0606 (the transplantation and reconstruction, 60 projects); 4) The average funded rate was 22.5% in the field of bony tissue engineering, 20% in locomotor related medicine, and 19.5% in cartilaginous tissue engineering. In research frontier and hot issues, the average funded rate repre- sented as 25.4% in stem cells, 29.1% in epigenetic related research fields and 26.1% in autophagy; 5) The top 3 funded units were Shanghai Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University and Second Military Medical University, both in the number and total funds. Conclusion The funded number and funds grew rapidly in the field of Locomotor Medicine from NSFC. The locomotor related medicine and tissue engineering of bone and cartilage will become the mainstream direction, while the stem cells, autophagy or epigenetic related research fields wilt be rapidly developed in future.
