Abstract

The design of a polarisation rotator which is based on the use of cascaded and oppositely-curved optical semiconductor waveguide bends is presented. Using the versatile finite element method, both modal solution and beam propagation analyses are adopted in order to analyse and optimise the rotator performance in terms of polarisation conversion ratio, device length, and scattering losses. A sensitivity analysis of the rotator performance with respect to various fabrication tolerances is also performed.
