Abstract

The development of the free surface at the front of an incompressible viscous fluid pushed into a circular pipe is analyzed numerically in the case without surface tension or gravity. Method of computation is an extension of the MAC (marker and cell) method. The numerical result shows that the flow has a tendency to converge to a steady state with a nearly spherical surface shape, and that the pressure on the axis just inside the surface is lower than the atmospheric pressure.
