Abstract

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique is widely used due to its high spectrum efficiency. It is used as physical layer standard in 802.11a WLAN standard & Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-t). The Fourth generation wireless communication standards are based of OFDM. Traditionally, Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT) has been used to produce the orthogonal sub-carriers. However, Discrete Wavelets Transformation (DWT) has been used to produce the orthogonal and Bi-orthogonal sub-carriers. The OFDM system performance is affected by the oscillator's phase noise instabilities in the transmission system. This paper presents simulation of wavelet based WLAN transmission scheme on AWGN channel & investigation of phase noise effects on bit error rate (BER). The BER performance plots of the system affected by errors as a function of phase noise 3-dB bandwidth on AWGN & multipath channels was obtained through simulations. The simulations shows that SNR required to achieve certain BER in wavelet based OFDM is less compared to FFT based OFDM in the presence of phase noise.
