Abstract

PURPOSE: The purpose of this research to evaluate the association between objectively measured daily physical activity(sedentary time) by accelerometer and body composition affecting elderly women’s muscle mass and functional fitness. Finally, this study present the base of understanding about Korean elderly women’s physical activity, obesity and fitness. METHODS: Subjects consisted of 94 persons aged above 65 years older korean women(72.74±5.1 years). Subjects completed the measured daily physical activity(accelerometer, actical: MINIMITER Company), %body fat(Biospace 720, Korea), functional fitness(relate strength and gait ability). The outcome measure was the mean of sedentary time for 7 days with participants classified into tertiles: low physical activity (sedentary time ≥1154 min/day) and high physical activity (sedentary time <1155min/day). The degrees of obesity with participants classified into tertiles: obesity cut point is 33.89% body fat. We compared between 4group (low physical activity and low fat mass, low physical activity and high fat mass, high physical activity and low fat mass, high physical activity and high fat mass). Analyses were conducted to compare the difference in physical activity level (sedentary time, light activity time moderate activity time per week) and obesity degree to find the some variables affecting elderly women’s muscle mass and functional fitness. The data collected in 4group were compared utilizing one-way ANOVA. RESULTS: The results obtained in the present study were as follows: 1) The High physical activity-high fat mass group had significantly higher muscle mass(7.1%, p<.05) than low physical activity-high fat mass group. 2) The High physical activity-high fat mass group had significantly higher muscle strength(grip strength, leg strength) and gait(10m walk, 6m walk, 3m back walk, stairs up 4 step, stairs down 4 step, 6min walk) than other group(p<.05). 3) But High physical activity-low fat mass group had significantly higher 6 min walk test only (p<.05). CONCLUSION : Reduce sedentary behavior(<1195 min/day) and high muscle mass(ignore fat mass) is improve muscle strength and gait ability for elderly women.
