Abstract

In 1994 the European Telecommunications Standards institute (ETSI) started work on the specification of a general packet radio service (GPRS) as part of the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) Phase 2+ development. By the end of 1997 standardization will presumably come to an end and the first introduction of GPRS will follow soon. On the basis of GPRS a range of new applications should be attracted to GSM to be well prepared for the hard competition within the future mobile telecommunications market. The communication concepts of GPRS are explained. Furthermore, the GPRS air-interface protocols that conform to the draft standard proposal are introduced and analyzed by simulation.
