Abstract

In this paper, we have designed multi- mode trench-assisted optical fibers with low bending loss and tightly confinement optical power. The optimized design parameters are obtained by introducing trench between inner cladding and outer cladding layer. We have studied the effect of different trench parameters on effective mode field diameter, optical power and field distribution in different modes of optical fiber, theoretically. The analysis shows that the relative refractive index difference in trench affects the properties of mode and power confinement in optical fiber for broadband applications. Broadband communications and access networks, including fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) have been evolving rapidly. Bend insensitive optical fiber, which has a low bending loss, has become particularly attractive as the FTTH service has expanded [1]. There have been many reports on bend-insensitive optical fibers that employ such techniques as reducing the mode field diameter (MFD) [2]. When talking about trench-assisted optical fiber (TA-F), bend-insensitive optical fiber can be used in FTTH applications [3]. The trench can reduce both macro-bending loss [4] and micro-bending loss [5]. It performs perfectly in following the ITU-T G.652 standard to achieve very low bending loss.
