Abstract

Prechtl's method of qualitative assessment of general movements (GMs), from videotape-recordings, is a sensitive method to investigate the integrity of the central nervous system in early life [ 1 Prechtl H.F.R. Qualitative changes of spontaneous movements in fetus and preterm infant are a marker of neurological dysfunction (Editorial). Early Hum Dev. 1990; 23: 151-158 Abstract Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (434) Google Scholar ]. This new method is non-intrusive, quick, has a high inter-scorer reliability and can be repeatedly applied in the same individual, thus obtaining a document of its developmental course. It has the advantage of applying the same qualitative criteria to fetuses and preterm infants as well as to infants during their first months of life.
