Summary

Introduction

When disasters and hazards cause evacuations, donations management and group coordination can be challenging for emergency managers, volunteers, and other groups (Holguín-Veras et al 2014). There are endogenous and exogenous factors that can impact the overall duration and nature of the response efforts during and after hazard events (Albala-Bertrand 2000) These response efforts can include varying forms of the convergence of supplies, people, and groups (Holguín-Veras et al 2014; Jobe 2011). On the social media forum, many animal rights groups, popular shelters, and individual citizens posted content that included a range of topics pertaining to the rescue, relief, and recovery of the animals This is an example of an emergent coalition (Dynes 1970; Stallings and Quarantelli 1985) that mobilized to assist with the evacuation of animals and humans with animals. While work on disaster management and emergent groups is not new (i.e., Fritz and Mathewson 1957), there is a scarcity of work that explores how online coalitions and emergent groups form and coordinate efforts in response to a hazard event
