Abstract

Mathematical models that were derived to determine the practical capacity of an airport have been used to determine the capacity and efficiency of various runway configuations for O’Hare International Airport. These mathematical models that are used to analyze capacity can also be used to determine the average operational delay for each hourly operating rate. This hourly delay been extended into daily and annual costs. Likewise, the taxi time between the terminals and the runways has been converted into aircraft operating costs. The air routes into and out of the airport have been examined to determine which runway configurations require excess flying. Excess flying time has been converted into aircraft operating costs. A summary of these operating costs and their comparisons for the various runway configurations indicates the relative saving that can be effected by added construction. Conclusions are drawn relative to the staging of new construction and the most efficient master plan for runway configuration.
