Abstract

This paper focuses on the analysis of the electromagnetic force distribution acting on the stator teeth and magnetic wedges in a large wound field synchronous machine (WFSM). The local forces are simulated using Ansys Maxwell software in 2-D finite element model (FEM) of the machine. Different shapes of magnetic wedges are used to understand their effect on the force distribution on the stator inner diameter. Forces due to rotor eccentricity are also investigated. Only rated steady-state operation is considered. Series configuration hybrid excitation synchronous machines (HESM) are proposed to reduce the stresses on both stator teeth and magnetic wedges.
