Abstract

Two alternative methods of analysing the lateral response of a pile of non-uniform section in an elasto-plastic soil mass are presented. The first utilises a finite element formulation for the pile while the second uses a finite difference formulation. It is shown that, although both methods give similar results for uniform section piles, the finite difference formulation becomes inaccurate when abrupt step changes in pile section are considered. Some parametric solutions are presented for a uniformly tapered pile, and these are presented as correction factors to the solutions for uniform section piles. Finally, two practical examples are given to illustrate the application of the analysis. /Author/
