Abstract

This paper describes, how, by a new procedure called the membrane factor method, the dynamic response of rigid plastic impulsively loaded beams with deflection in the range in which bending moment and membrane force both are of importance, is analyzed. The analysis shows that the membrane factor method, which retains the effect of the membrane force induced by large deflection on energy dissipation, provides a simpler way to trace the large deflection dynamic plastic response of beams with end axial constraints, than the complicated conventional methods. The theoretical method can be applied to the large deformations of dynamically loaded rigid-plastic plates.
