Abstract

The stress analysis of a small knuckle region between two smooth shell segments is studied with the aid of an asymptotic expansion valid for small deviation from the nominal geometry. A simple design formula which includes the nonlinear prestress effect is obtained for the maximum stress in the knuckle portion. Graphs are presented from which stress concentration can be easily determined for a wide variation of parameters.
