Abstract
AbstractConcrete composite beam reinforced with I-section may not adequately develop bond strength between the interface of steel and concrete unlike regular reinforcement in reinforced cement concrete (RCC) beam with HYSD bars. Hence, there is a need for improving the bond strength between I-section and concrete by added components. The objective of the work reported through this paper is the investigation of suitability of using winding wire and metal strap around the I-section for effective development of bond. A numerical model is prepared in ABAQUS for detailed finite element analysis. An M20 grade concrete beam of length 5 m embedded with ISMB300 with simply supported ends is applied with uniformly distributed load over the span and analyzed separately with winding wires and metal straps. After the mesh convergence study, parametric studies were carried out on the model by varying the size and spacing of winding wire and metal strap of specific size welded on top and bottom flanges of I-section. Stresses and deflections obtained for different models were compared and the size and spacing of the metal straps that lead to optimal performance are arrived at.KeywordsFinite element analysisI-section beamComposite beamWinding wireBond stress analysis
