Abstract

This paper proposes a comprehensive analysis of inter-turn short circuits (ISC) in interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSM). Although there is plenty of literature available for inter-turn short circuit analysis in electric machines, there is a gap of knowledge to unify ISC analysis of IPMSM under the same constraints. This paper conducts ISC finite element analysis (FEA) under different operating conditions and slot/pole combinations under the same current density. This study also provides a discussion on how an ISC could cause saturation in the motor. Finally, an analysis of ISC under closed-loop control in the rotor reference frame is performed. This paper provides opportunities for machine designs robust to ISC and techniques to detect ISC using the control loop.
