Abstract

This paper presents an application of the finite element method (FEM) to analyse hydrodynamic properties of a floating breakwater in heaving and swaying motions. The breakwater body is considered as an elliptical cylinder and its aspect ratio b/a is varied from 0.5 to 1.5 to examine shape effects. Comparison of FEM solution with an existing theoretical solution shows good agreement. The dependency of hydrodynamic properties such as added mass, damping coefficient, dynamic pressure distribution and wave amplitude on the frequency of the oscillation is established.
