Abstract

Handoff is the mechanism that transfers an ongoing call from one cell to another as a user moves through the coverage area of a cellular system. Handoff is the key operation in cellular mobile communication system, which is accomplished by the system and is unperceptible for the user. In this paper, the received signal strength from the two base stations is calculated and plotted with respect to distance. Different path loss models for macrocells have been used and then the received signal strength is calculated to determine the model that can be adopted to minimize the number of handoffs and avoid ping pong effect.
