Abstract

The focus of this paper is on identifying geometric rules occurring in the design of the house of the Nikolić brothers at 11 Njegoševa Street in Belgrade constructed to a design by architect Branko Tanazević in 1912. The study is based on a comparative analysis of geometric and morphological rules in the following parts of the design: ground-floor plan, front façade and characteristic details. The analysis of the façade composition, which is achieved by drawing geometric moves - by analogy, results in proportion diagrams expressed in numbers (3:4), (4:3) and (3:1) as well as in the proportion of the 'golden section' or continued fraction (1:1.618)=(3:5) and its reciprocal. Further analysis of the proportions of the front elevation based on the adopted geometric shape of a square (1:1) arrives at the proportion relations: (2:1), (3:1), (4:1), (5:2) and (5:4). The use of the same proportion key for the whole composition and its individual parts suggests their compatibility (the possibility of a connection between structural elements and systems based on dimensional properties).

Introduction

The focus of this paper is on identifying geometric rules occurring in the design of the house of the Nikolić brothers at 11 Njegoševa Street in Belgrade constructed to a design by architect Branko Tanazević in 1912.
