Abstract

The ridgetail white prawn Exopalaemon carinicauda, an important commercial shrimp species, is naturally distributed along the coasts of China. In order to assess the level of genetic diversity, 268 individuals from seven different geographical regions of China were analyzed using microsatellite markers. Based on the allelic diversity, E. carinicauda populations in Lianyungang and Ninghai showed high level of genetic diversity, and the other five populations (Dandong, Binzhou, Haiyang, Nantong, Guangzhou) showed moderate level of genetic diversity. Pairwise comparison of Fst indicated that low level of genetic differentiation existed in these seven populations, among which the highest genetic variation existed between Guangzhou and Binzhou. Phylogenetic analysis and STRUCTURE analysis showed that these seven populations could be separated into three clusters, which is consistent with their geographical location. This study provided information for genetic improvement, sustainable exploitation and it was also helpful to develop appropriate strategies for the conservation of E. carinicauda.
