Abstract

The performance capability of the 40,000-SHP family (25% mTO criterion) was also calculated for a mode of operation in which the hydrofoil would alternately sprint at speed Vs and then drift at speed VD (hullborne, with its engine virtually idling). Let the fraction of time sprinting be rs, and the fraction of time drifting be TD (rs + TD = 1). The sprint/drift time split depends upon the assumed average speed for the cycle Vavg (assumed to be 20 knots), the sprint speed Vs (variable), and the drift speed VD (assumed to be 10 knots). Equations (2) and (3) become:
