Abstract

1. 1. The precipitation of dicumarol is quantitative when the compound is formed in the presence of an excess of 4-hydroxycoumarin. 2. 2. The reaction of 4-hydroxycoumarin with formaldehyde may be used for the quantitative analysis of formaldehyde. 3. 3. The precipitation of dicumarol is not quantitative in the presence of an excess of formaldehyde. 4. 4. The most favorable condition for the formation of di(4-hydroxycoumarinyl) acetic acid is an excess of 4-hydroxycoumarin in an acidic media. 5. 5. An excess of glyoxylic acid lowers the yield of di(4-hydroxycoumarinyl) acetic acid in the reaction with 4-hydroxycoumarin. 6. 6. Oxidation with Tollen's reagent may be used for the quantitative analysis of glyoxylic acid. 7. 7. Oxidation with basic silver nitrate and triethylamine may be used for the quantitative analysis of formaldehyde.
