Abstract

The experience of diversification of the large ship repair yards of the United States of America has been studied. Three powerful US shipyards are taken as an example: Los Angeles division of the Todd Shipyards, Avondale Shipyard and San Francisco Naval Shipyard Hunters Point. All these plants were diversified because of the lack of the customers for the ship repair and shipbuilding services. The market pushed them to find other ways to get money. In this article the author analyzes the reasons of the shipyards transfer to the “alternative rails”. The ways of the modern development of the diversified capacities and territories are studied. These ways and the US experience are projected to the Ukrainian analog companies. The study results can be used to help the Ukrainian, Russian and European ship repair and shipbuilding companies to improve their business results via the diversification or additional marketing core business research. It can be concluded that the diversification of each of the above mentioned US shipyards was not carried using a particular type of the template for the United States, but on the basis of special marketing research. The success of the diversification of the US ship repair and shipbuilding companies is the right choice of market development trends, depending on the macroeconomic and microeconomic conditions which prevail in each particular region where the enterprise is located. As a result, the diversification experience of Hunters Point Shipyard could be useful for Sevastopol Marine Plant before it became the Russian territory in March 2014; and the experience of Los Angeles division of Todd Shipyards and Avondale Shipyard is useful for shipyards, based in Nikolayev.
