Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe, in detail, the use of non-linear geometric and non-linear material two-dimensional finite element analysis to model the initiation of fiber micro-buckling in initially straight and wavy columns. The analysis is applied at the micromechanics level. Some wavy fiber results are presented and compared with existing experimental results to illustrate the free-surface effects on fiber microbuckling initiation.
