Abstract

Aiming at the problems of large number and large loss of existing modular multilevel converter (MMC) sub-module topology devices with fault blocking capability, the improved dual-half bridge sub-module topology is proposed. The topology can block the fault current path by blocking all pulse signals without changing the original control strategy. In this paper, the DC fault blocking mechanism of the topology is analyzed in detail, and the modulation mode of the system is determined. The device characteristics and loss characteristics of the sub-module are studied and compared with other improved half-bridge topologies. The MMC system based on the proposed sub-module topology was simulated by PSCAD/EMTDC. The results show that the proposed topology has a small number of devices and low operating loss, which can effectively block the fault current.
