Abstract

Procedures generally recognized as suitable for the preparation of fatty acid methyl esters using boron trifluoride-methanol have been shown to be inadequate when the analyte contain appreciable amounts of low-molecular-weight esters. A modified technique is described which maximizes extraction of the esters into iso-octane solution, and thereby improves quantitative accurachy and precision for esters down to and including methyl caproate.
