Abstract

ABSTRACT A survey disclosed that the disk spindle of the SIECO 450 mounted fireplow has failed frequently. Field tests were conducted to measure the actual strain in the disk spindle using a microcomputer to collect data from strain gages mounted on the spindle. The results disclosed stress levels higher than the yield strength of the spindle. One alternate design would produce stress levels lower than the yield strength, but would require major changes in the spindle housing. Another design retains the original shaft diameter but requires the use of a steel with a yield strength of at least 1000 MPa..
