Abstract

Large electrolytic dc-link capacitor is bulky and vulnerable to current ripple and heat. It is desirable to reduce the dc-link capacitor or employ a small film dc-link capacitor for reducing the size and cost. However, either small film dc-link capacitor or small electrolytic dc-link capacitor can cause significant dc-link voltage fluctuation which will cause rotor position estimation errors in sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous machine drives, especially when the load is heavy. Therefore, the effect of large fluctuating dc-link voltage on the extended electromotive force based sensorless control method is analysed in this paper and verified by both the simulation and measured results.
