Abstract
An analysis is made of the error due to edge heat loss in the steady-state determination of thermal conductivity using a hot plate as recommended in British Standard 874: 1956. The solution obtained applies to a rectangular hot plate with or without a guard ring and takes account of heat exchange at the exposed edges of the test specimen in a more precise way than existing solutions. It is therefore less restricted in its application to practical tests.
