Abstract

In this paper, the characteristics of electromagnetic force and vibration of a 50kW 48-slot/8-pole interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous motor are studied for the purpose of understanding its vibration mechanism. The electromagnetic force and resulting vibration of the IPM motor are evaluated with electromagnetic, and harmonic response finite element analysis (FEA) respectively. The vibration responses with two different methods of applying the electromagnetic force are also compared. It is concluded that simple lumped force excitation will bring inaccuracy when the spatial modes of the major excitations are too high. In addition, the in-plane vibration modes (modes without axial deflections) are identified as the major contributors to vibration response.
