Abstract

Specific absorption rate is a measure of the maximum rate at which radio frequency energy is absorbed by the body when exposed to radio-frequency electromagnetic field. The SAR value will heavily depend on the geometry of the part of the body that is exposed to the RF energy, and on the exact location and geometry of the source of the RF energy. SAR due to Mobile phone is higher than other RF sources like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Devices. This is due to output power emitted by mobile phone higher than Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. SAR is the amount of electromagnetic power absorbed over the specific volume of tissue. SAR is directly proportional to power and hence mobile phone has high Specific Absorption Rate. SAR is spatially averaged over 1g or 10 grams of human tissue. SAR distribution in human head is calculated by solving Maxwell's field equations in time domain. The ultimate fate of this EM energy depends on the situation. It could be immediately re-radiated and appear as scattered, reflected, or transmitted radiation. It may also get dissipated into other microscopic motions within the matter, coming to thermal equilibrium and manifesting itself as thermal energy in the material.
