Abstract
Numerical simulations by a geometric parameter approach of ductile fracture processes in damaged pipelines are here presented and discussed. The geometric parameters are the crack-tip-opening-displacement (CTOD) and the crack-tip-opening-angle (CTOA): following recent literature, they are assumed to govern the onset of crack propagation and the subsequent propagation phase, respectively. A simplified procedure is proposed for the identification of critical CTOA c as a function of the tip advancement. Numerical simulations of crack propagation in Three-Point-Bending Tests and in pressurised damaged pipelines are critically presented and compared with experiments and with numerical simulations based on the use of Gurson's model.
