Abstract

When a driver encounters a yellow signal on approaching a signalized intersection, he/she changes the speed of the vehicle to stop at or to pass the intersection. This paper describes the characteristics of acceleration or deceleration of a vehicle, and the quantification of dispersion in stopping at or passing through intersection under such conditions. The measurement of the real traffic flow data includes the position and speed of each vehicle approaching an intersection at every one second around yellow signal, and the trajectory of each vehicle has been estimated. The analysis with the estimated data shows the characteristics of acceleration correlate closely with the shape of estimated dispersion with entropy concept.
