Abstract

Variable Speed (VS) Pumped Storage Plants (PSP) equipped with large asynchronous (Doubly-Fed Induction) machines is an emerging technology nowadays. Motoring mode of operation of Doubly-Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) is essential and techno-economical in this application due to: (i) its uniqueness in active power controllability, (ii) bulk power handing capability with less rated power converters in rotor circuit, and (iii) integrating Renewable Energy Sources (RES). This paper investigates the performance of 2.2kW DFIM under voltage sag with variation in sag-depth, duration and recovery (abrupt/discrete). The test results are analyzed in terms of the peaks in total power drawn and transients in rotor and stator currents. The negative effects of voltage sag are briefly discussed with MATLAB simulation.
