Abstract

Doubly Fed Asynchronous Machine (DFAM) is preferred in variable speed pumped storage plants since it offers high dynamic stability and provides high efficiency in the partial load operation. In this machine, rotor side back-back power converters rated at slip power provides reactive power support to the power system without its mechanical power source through variable speed condenser action. This paper presents a dynamic behavior of DFAM acting as the variable speed condenser mode. Further, the performance of DFAM condenser is assessed under power converter faults and persevere ability of the machine is analyzed based on performance measures: (i) speed, (ii) current (iii) DC link voltage. Variable speed DFAM (3 hP) condenser operation is analyzed in MATLAB/ Simulink and evaluated with experimental results in the laboratory level.
