Abstract

Collective bilayer mechanical properties depend on membrane composition. Due to this, mechanical constants are commonly reported on a “per lipid” basis. Knowledge of bilayer composition in multicomponent membranes and material properties of the corresponding lipid species, therefore, allows for the calculation of bilayer elasticity, preferred shape, and deformation energetics. Fundamental to this model is that “per lipid” mechanical properties are additive, although this assumption is rarely tested.
