Abstract

The depression of the self-diffusion coefficient of iron upon magnetic ordering is compared with similar effects which occur in order-disorder alloys. A treatment which uses the basic assumptions of the Bragg-Williams description of order-disorder alloys is used to develop an equation giving the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient of iron both above and below the Curie temperature as a function of the activation energy of diffusion in the paramagnetic range and a magnetic ordering term. This equation fits recently published diffusion data in iron-base systems.
