Abstract

The data collection network system is one of the most effective applications of the meteor burst communication. Various protocols suited for MBC data collection systems are proposed. However, classification and comparison of these protocols have not yet been performed. In this paper, we classify the protocols into two categories: repetition transmission schemes and polling schemes. The polling schemes can be further divided into three subcategories: the individual polling scheme, the global polling scheme, and the group polling scheme. For these last three polling schemes, the average waiting time required for the collection of data from all terminals is analytically obtained. The optimum number of terminals in a group is also obtained for the group polling scheme. Then we conclude that the optimized group polling scheme is most efficient when the system has a reasonable number of terminals. © 1997 Scripta Technica, Inc.
