Abstract

In this paper, the impact of damping electromechanical oscillation using discrete feedback signals from Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) was examined. The simulated PMU extracted phasor information by using conventional Discrete Fourier Transformation (DFT). Studies of the damping performance under various PMU reporting rate were also conducted. From simulated small-signal disturbances and faults, it was found that the integration of PMU could achieve similar damping performance as those of analogue inputs. However, the damping performances using the simulated PMU were also observed to be less desirable than using an ideal PMU. The cause is the ideal PMU does not consider estimation imperfections such as leakage effects and hardware limitations of A/D conversion. This paper concluded that using PMU measurements as feedback signals is suitable damping oscillations. Detailed PMU model is recommended to be considered during the formulation and validation of a control strategy.
