Abstract

The numerical simulation is presented to analyze the cutting temperature in drilling. Cutting edges are divided into discrete segments in the cutting area. The chip flow model of the drilling process is made by piling up the orthogonal cuttings in the plains containing the cutting velocities and the chip flow velocities, where the chip flow direction is determined to minimize the cutting energy. Then, the cutting force can be predicted in the determined the chip flow models. The normal and the friction stresses are distributed in the orthogonal cutting plane on the segmented edge based on the predicted cutting force. The temperature distribution in the cutting model on the segmented edge is analyzed in finite volume method. The temperature analysis is performed for cuttings of carbon steel.
