Abstract

Herein, the transformer-type superconducting fault-current limiter (SFCL) with an additional coupled secondary winding is proposed and the transient current-limiting characteristics using its double quench is analyzed through the fault-current limiting tests. The additional coupled secondary winding that is wound on the same core together with the primary and secondary windings comprising the proposed transformer-type SFCL, contributed to the peak fault-current limiting operation for the larger transient fault current directly after the fault occurrence. Among the effective design parameters, which affects the amplitude of the fault current, the fault-current limiting tests of the suggested SFCL was performed according to the winding direction of the additional coupled secondary winding. By analyzing the electrical equivalent circuit considering the magnetizing current, the different current-limiting characteristics of the SFCL using its double quench were confirmed.
