Abstract

Trends in regulations and guidelines of U.S., Canada, and Europe are summarized. These trends, based on task and sleep interference, as well as annoyance, are presented in terms of normalized A‐weighted sound levels. Effectiveness of noise control is measured in relation to the reduction of A‐weighted sound levels with respect to the summarized regulatory criteria. Several major complaint sources are identified including residential air conditioning, road transportation, and industrial plant operation. Comparison of retrofitting with planned noise control is made on specific examples on the basis of (1) best identical technological measure, (2) best technological measure; and (3) best preplanning consideration with respect to best retrofitting measure.
