Abstract

ABSTRACT IN commonly used tractor steering systems, the steered wheels cannot roll around a common center during steering. As a result, certain amount of lateral slip occurs whenever the vehicle turns. The lateral slip increases the rolling resistance and accentuates the tire wear as well as increasing the steering effort. Traditional graphical design methods for steering linkages are both tedious and inaccurate. A set of new equations for the design of steering linkages has been derived for optimum design. The effect of inaccuracy of the commonly used steering systems has been estimated on lateral slip. This lateral slip can be minimized by optimum design of linkage parameters.
