Abstract

A method for ultimate strength analysis of steel-concrete composite beams with unreinforced rectangular web openings is presented. The method accounts for the contribution of the concrete slab to the shear strength of the composite beam. Openings may be concentric or eccentric with respect to the steel section. Complete interaction between the steel beam and concrete slab is assumed in the analysis. Buckling and instability failures of the composite beam are not considered in the present analysis. Comparisons are made with test results reported in the literature by other investigators and show good agreement. Study of the effect of the opening eccentricity, opening height and length on the strength of the composite beam is also presented.
