Abstract

CNG is an alternative fuel that is also well proven to be used in marine diesel engine, which is expected to produce good efficiency and low emission. Special attention is needed when using CNG because of the fuel characteristics differences between the gas and diesel oil. From several technologies available, dual fuel technology is the best option to be used on-board a ship. This research deals with the modification of a single cylinder conventional diesel engine to be converted to become a dual fuel capability. The test engine is modeled and simulated to investigate the values of pressure, temperature, heat flux, and velocity flow occurred in the combustion chamber by varying gas/diesel oil compositions of 0%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. This approach is expected to be a representative of the combustion behaviors. Finally, from the simulation results, these parameters of combustion; in-cylinder pressure of 84.76 bar, temperature of 2174.77 K, heat flux of 1766 kW/m2, and velocity flow of 26.87 m/s should be anticipated as the highest values that may work in the modified engine.
