Abstract

The response of coal particles undergoing pyrolysis is analyzed. A general reaction scheme including both decomposition and evaporation type reactions is incorporated into equations governing conservation of energy, solid and gaseous species, and void volume in a spherical coal particle. The equation set is solved numerically by finite difference methods. Sample results are presented to illustrate the effect of pressure level, competing decomposition and vaporization reactions, and cracking of volatiles within the particle.
