Abstract

A theoretical analysis of the stable conditions of operation of the pyroelectric vidicon tube near cathode potential is presented. A realistic functional form is used for the beam landing characteristic. A method of obtaining the stable condition is used which is more direct and simple to apply than that used by Beurle for the photoconductive vidicon. Results are obtained for the stable-state readout signal voltage, the value of voltage before readout and also the characteristic electrical time response (stabilisation time) of the system. The general conclusions following from this analysis are: (1) A positive pedestal voltage is required for stabilisation; (2) the value of the pedestal determines what fraction of the available pyroelectric charge is read out, and the corresponding response time. The question of the appropriate figure of merit for materials for vidicon tube application is also discussed.
