Abstract

Summary Rock-physics templates establish a link between the seismic properties (e.g., velocity, density, impedance, attenuation) and the reservoir properties such as porosity, fluid saturation. We focus on template based on attenuation (quality factor Q), which is highly affected by those properties. We consider carbonate reservoirs, which constitute sixty percent of the world oil reserves and a potential for additional gas reserves. The seismic properties are described with mesoscopic-loss model, the double double-porosity model, which includes frame and fluid heterogeneities. And we built an attenuation template based on the model. Ultrasonic laboratory experiments are performed on the 9 rock samples which are collected from carbonate reservoirs of MX work area in the Sichuan Basin, southwest China. The attenuation of P-wave is estimated by using the spectral ratio method. By comparing the template and experiment data, the results are consistent with the porosity and water saturation of samples. Thus, the template can be used for an analysis of reservoir parameters, which provides insights on seismic attributes for hydrocarbon detection and reservoir delineation.
